Best VPN Services of 2021

according to 30+ independent VPN experts & reviews

Our experts gathered all the VPN Experts & Reviews rankings, ratings, and opinions into one ultimate list

If you’re not using a VPN in 2021, you have ZERO privacy when connected to the internet, whether through your phone, tablet, computer, or even Smart TV. Your browsing history (even with incognito), locations, habits, interests, and more are being monitored, collected, and sold to companies you’ve never heard of without your permission (legally since 2017). This data is not just used for advertising either — according to a Yahoo article from September 2021, “your credit score may soon depend on your web history”. That’s pretty frightening. Imagine your credit card gets declined because you searched the “wrong” thing… or have a habit that creditors don’t like… seriously.  If you’re like us, you’ll want to protect your data, and using a VPN is going to be the best (and easiest) way to do it.

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a service that creates an anonymous, private internet connection for you through one of the VPN’s servers around the world. This means your ISP, phone carrier, or government won’t be able to monitor what you do, and websites and advertisers won’t be able to easily track your online activity.

Why Trust Just One Expert?

If you try to search for the Best VPN, you’ll probably notice every “VPN expert” has a different opinion on what the best VPN is. Who do you trust? If you’re like us, we don’t just trust one expert’s opinion…

So we put together all of the VPN recommendations from 30+ of the top VPN experts we found on Google and summarized the results below so you can quickly and confidently start using the best VPN service right away.

How We Determine The Best VPN: Methodology

How does BestVPNProvider determine the best VPN service? Well, our methodology is quite different than other VPN Review websites.

Our goal is to find the best VPN providers determined by their average respective rankings on the most popular third-party VPN review websites, articles, and guides you would likely find searching through Google. This Best VPN list is meant for my OCD peeps that aren’t satisfied with one website or expert’s opinion — and would normally spend hours or days reading and researching across dozens of websites before deciding and choosing the real best VPN provider.

To keep this Best VPN Provider’s list honest, trustworthy and unbiased — our ranking methodology is straightforward, transparent, and verifiable.

  1. We start by combing through the top 30 Google search results for “Best VPN” to gather data on what VPNs each website or article (experts) recommended and what rank they were placed from 1 to 10 (1 being the best).
  2. We disregarded less popular VPNs that were only recommended scarcely (on less than 10% of websites).
  3. We then averaged all of the rankings for each VPN Provider to determine the 10 VPNs with the lowest (best) average rank. This didn’t consider third-party star ratings or user ratings in our rankings (a little overkill and too complex for now) but we do gather and display that data.
  4. Finally, we organize and present our research and findings on this beautiful page, so you can save time and confidently move forward in choosing the best VPN for your needs.

"The Best “All-Around VPN"

- Rob Mardisalu, TheBestVPN.com

Ranked: 1st out of 78 VPNs
Rated: 5/5 Stars

“NordVPN has been one of the leading VPN providers with the best security. As you can see throughout this NordVPN review, the reasons for their popularity are valid. It’s secure, fast, and easy to use, with some amazing features to ensure your data and information are always protected. That’s why they take the first place on our list of VPNs.

Also, with a customer support team like NordVPN’s, you’ll never have to feel alone in ensuring you’re browsing securely.

I absolutely recommend NordVPN if you’re looking for a great solution for an even better price!”

Most Critical Review

"A Popular (and Pricey) VPN"

- Leeron Hoory & Adam Hardy, Forbes

Ranked: 4th out of 10 VPNs
Rated: 4/5 Stars

NordVPN has the highest annual cost [among ProtonVPN and CyberGhost]. However, when you sign up for a two-year plan, the cost drops to £31.43 per year. A two-year plan for ProtonVPN totals £33.75 per year. CyberGhost still offers the most competitive pricing, at £29.58 per year for a two-year plan.

When it comes to the maximum number of devices you can use, NordVPN is on the lower end of the market with a limit of six devices. The company outshines the competition with the number of servers as well as operating countries. The company operates under the jurisdiction of Panama, where there are no laws that mandate data retention. Thus, it is able to maintain a strong commitment to privacy and a no-logs policy.”

ExpressVPN — The Best Premium VPN in the World

ExpressVPN TL;DR Summary

  • Avg. Expert Ranking:  2.3 (lower is better)
  • Experts: 93% of experts recommend ExpressVPN.
  • Price: $6.67/mo (View Pricing)
  • Speed: Super fast. Over 1 GB/s
  • Streaming: Yes, works great with Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and HBOMax.
  • Torrents: Yes, fully supported on all servers.
  • Privacy: Strict No-Logging + Non-14-Eyes
  • Refunds: 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Network: 3,000+ servers in 94 countries
  • Simultaneous Devices: 5 Active Devices at once
  • Kill Switch: Yes

ExpressVPN is the best premium VPN in the world, and is tied 1st with NordVPN as the most recommended VPN by 93% of experts. ExpressVPN was ranked #1 by 50% of experts (more than NordVPN), but fell short with other experts primarily on its above-average price. This makes ExpressVPN notably the BEST PREMIUM VPN with the most No. 1 recommendations

ExpressVPN has been operating since 2009 and claims to be the fastest VPN on the market. It operates over 145 server locations in 94 countries and takes pride in its high-speed connections due to its excellent infrastructure. ExpressVPN provides software for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, Android, and iOS. Plans start at $12.95/month, or get a 35% discount to $8.32/month ($99.95/year) with the annual plan. ExpressVPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try it risk-free.

Why Choose ExpressVPN

Here are the top ten most talked about reasons that experts recommend ExpressVPN and why it’s considered the best to many experts.

#1. No logs, strong encryption

With any VPN that you use, the company should never keep any access logs of your activity while connected to their service. ExpressVPN takes this a step further and does not even collect connection metadata such as timestamps or bandwidth data, which prevents them from gathering data that could be used to spy on your online activity. However, ExpressVPN does keep minimal connection logs for troubleshooting purposes – such as the time at which a connection was made and the amount of bandwidth used during a fixed period (no IP address is recorded).

This no-logging policy is what makes ExpressVPN one of the best VPNs on the market, because they are one of the only VPN’s that takes privacy seriously. They also offer incredibly strong 256-bit AES encryption to prevent your ISP or a government agency from snooping on you while the connection is active.

#2. Secure Core (double VPN) feature available

One of ExpressVPN’s most unique features is their double-VPN technology. This feature allows you to route your traffic through two VPN servers, which increases connection speed and provides an extra layer of encrypted security.

You can use this feature with either TCP or UDP connections, but it works best if you are using the UDP protocol (most streaming devices don’t support TCP). If your device does not support UDP, then I suggest you use TCP to ensure maximum compatibility.

If you are using the double-VPN feature, you should connect to your VPN’s nearest server location. For example, if you are in Australia and want to route traffic through two servers, select a server located somewhere close by (such as USA for instance).

#3. Lightening Fast Lightway Encryption Protocol

ExpressVPN supports all the major VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec and PPTP, but they also have a neat trick up their sleeve — a custom-built, super fast Lightway protocol. According to expert tests, Lightway is extremely fast, much faster than OpenVPN and even Windguard at times. This protocol is ideal for streaming and gaming according to VPNMentor. The only drawbacks were lack of obfuscation and no iOS support.

#4. Split tunneling feature

Split tunneling is a cool feature which allows you to select what traffic will be routed through your VPN connection, and what will go directly to your ISP (which means your local network can still access devices connected to your VPN). This feature makes it easy to get around location restrictions and access content available only in certain countries.

#5. Torrenting / P2P friendly

ExpressVPN does not block, throttle or restrict P2P/torrent traffic – however they do recommend choosing a server that is closest to your actual location. There are plenty of torrent-friendly servers all over the world, and you can use ExpressVPN’s “Smart Location” feature (if it’s available in your package) to find the fastest P2P servers near you.

#6. Lots of security features

ExpressVPN offers a number of great security features, including split tunneling, a network lock feature (kill switch), the ability to choose the protocol you use for connection. They also offer web proxy extensions for Chrome and Firefox browsers, which are very useful if you don’t want to install VPN software on your computer or mobile device. You can also set ExpressVPN to automatically connect when your device boots up, or as a desktop application.

#7. Good speeds and performance

ExpressVPN has one of the largest networks of any VPN provider – with over 3,200 servers in 94 different countries. Although this is a lot more than most competitors can offer, they still manage to maintain high speeds across the network – making it great for streaming in HD/4K.

#8. Top-rated mobile apps in 2021

Even though they are most popular with desktop users, ExpressVPN mobile apps have also received excellent ratings on iOS and Android platforms. I’ve personally never had any issues using their mobile apps, which are very similar to the desktop client in terms of features and design (the split tunneling feature is missing however).

#9. Great support

ExpressVPN offers 24/7 customer support through live chat (they also offer a ticket system and very useful tutorial center). Their team will be happy to help you solve any issues with installation or server selection, and they usually respond within 10 minutes.

#10. Works with Netflix and other streaming services

ExpressVPN is one of the few VPN providers that still manages to unblock Netflix and other streaming services. They currently offer servers that work with most streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and HBO Go. You can also use ExpressVPN to watch US/UK TV channels anywhere in the world by using their MediaStreamer feature (this feature is included free with some of their packages).

ExpressVPN offers a risk-free 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee.

SurfShark — Best VPN for Unlimited Devices

TL;DR Summary

  • Avg. Ranking: 3.8 (lower is better)
  • Experts: 93% (28/30) of experts recommend SurfShark
  • Price: $2.49/mo (View Pricing)
  • Speed: Pretty fast (4/5)
  • Streaming: Yes, works with Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, Kodi, Spotify, Vudu, Crunchyroll, and others
  • Torrents: Yes, fully supported on all servers.
  • Privacy: No-Logging Policy + Privacy-friendly jurisdiction
  • Refunds: 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Network: 3,200 servers in 65 countries
  • Simultaneous Devices: Unlimited
  • Kill Switch: Yes

Surfshark is the 3rd Best VPN overall on the internet with an average rank of 3.75 (1 being the best) and is tied 1st with NordVPN & ExpressVPN as the most recommended VPN (93% of experts). SurfShark claim the spot of the Best VPN for Unlimited Devices, while other top ranked VPNs have device limits of 5 or 6.

Surfshark is a VPN provider that offers no-logging policies, fast speeds, and unlimited simultaneous connections. They also have many connection points in 65+ countries. Their most expensive plan is $2.49/month, and they do offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Why Choose SurfShark VPN

Unlimited Devices On 1 Account

Surfshark is the best VPN that allows Unlimited Devices with just one VPN account, one important feature that neither NordVPN (6 devices) nor ExpressVPN (5 devices) can beat.

This feature is perfect if you want to share your subscription with friends or family, or you just have a lot of devices to encrypt (think TV, Router, iPads, Laptops, Desktops, Phones, etc.). You can protect all their devices simultaneously with just one account with SurfShark.

Optimized For Streaming

One of Surfshark’s main selling points is its compatibility with Netflix and other streaming services. SurfShark has servers in 9 different countries dedicated strictly to unblocking content on Netflix. They are one of the only VPN providers that actually has made some effort to make their interface compatible with streaming services.

Extra Privacy & Security

One other standout point that I want to mention is that Surfshark takes privacy seriously. They are based in the British Virgin Islands which has no mandatory data retention laws and is a well-known privacy haven. You might also want to look at their kill switch which they call the “Scramble” feature. This scrambles your connection so it can’t be intercepted by an ISP or any third party who tries to monitor you. Other notable advanced security & privacy features include MultiHop (Double VPN), Bypasser (Split Tunneling), Camouflage Mode (Obfuscation), and RAM-only VPN servers.

Compare All Expert SurfShark Reviews

SurfShark is the 3rd best VPN service, and highly recommended by over 93% of experts online, mostly praising it’s fast speed, easy to use apps and unlimited devices. Here’s how the expert’s ranked Surfshark:

“If you don’t want to spend a fortune on a VPN but still want online anonymity and access to restricted streaming content, Surfshark is the perfect choice. While it’s not as flexible as more expensive rivals, it’s powerful enough for most, and has been very reliable in our testing.”

CyberGhost VPN — Best Biggest VPN Provider

TL;DR Summary

  • Avg. Expert Ranking: 4.9 (lower is better)
  • Experts: 87% (26/30) of experts recommend CyberGhost
  • Price: $1.99/mo (View Pricing)
  • Speed: Fast download & upload speeds, but slightly slower-than-average to connect at times.
  • Streaming: Yes, works with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, YouTube & Crunchyroll
  • Torrents: Yes, specialized high-speed torrenting servers
  • Privacy: Strict No-Logging Policy
  • Refunds: 45-day money-back guarantee
  • Network: 7,100 servers in 91 countries
  • Simultaneous Devices: 10
  • Kill Switch: Yes

CyberGhost is a Romanian-based VPN service with an excellent price to quality ratio. They have a no-logging policy, great speeds, and plenty of servers located worldwide. Their software is easy to use and available for all popular platforms – both desktop and mobile. You can connect 7 devices at once with an unlimited bandwidth which makes them perfect for families or multiple connections on your own device.

CyberGhost has dedicated streaming servers to unblock Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and more so you can stream from anywhere around the world and gain access to your home content library or international content libraries.

They offer the best VPN prices ranging from $1.99 to $12.99/mo with a great 45-day money-back guarantee as well as a 7-day free trial, so you can test the service before getting locked in.

Why Choose CyberGhost VPN?

Why choose CyberGhost VPN instead of another VPN provider? Here are the top reasons that experts expressed:

7-Day Free Trial & 45-day money-back guarantee!

CyberGhost VPN offers an unparallel and industry-leading 45-day money-back guarantee along with a 7-day free trial. If you are not satisfied with the service within that time frame, then you can request your money back – no questions asked. This is far better than the industry norm, which is a 30-day money-back guarantee and no free trial. This makes it an ideal first choice for people that are on the fence and want peace of mind knowing they won’t lose their money if it doesn’t work out.

CyberGhost is Fast (75% of experts agree)

CyberGhost is renowned for its speed. It can handle torrenting, streaming, and regular browsing with ease. Not only are the servers fast but you can connect up to 7 devices with one account at a time. This makes it an excellent option for families or groups on the go who need to be connected. You won’t experience lag or any other issues while using CyberGhost VPN and this is what will make it the ideal service for you.

CyberGhost Unlocks Most Streaming Services

CyberGhost is the go-to for streaming. It has dedicated streaming servers to unblock Netflix libraries in the US, UK, Italy, France, Germany, and Spain. Other streaming services it can unblock are Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer. This ensures that you will be able to stream your favorite content from anywhere around the world and discover new content that isn’t available in your country.

Private Internet Access (commonly referred to as PIA) is a well-known American-based VPN service and the best in the industry for many users. It’s affordable and provides access to servers in 78 countries. Private Internet Access also provides strong encryption with both WindGuard and OpenVPN protocols to keep your data safe. Their client’s easy to use and the support staff is helpful. While the company has strong privacy and no-logging policies, it is based out of Denver, Colorado placing it under the jurisdiction of the 5-eyes alliance.

PIA’s VPN service works well with streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu, as well as torrenting. The speeds are good, though not the best in the industry, you can’t expect blazing fast speeds from a VPN because your internet speed will always be limited to however fast your ISP can go.

PIA is a good buy and at $2.19 – $9.95 USD/mo depending on the length of time you sign up for, it’s affordable too! They offer a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with their service.

Why Choose PIA VPN?

“Private Internet Access stands out as our top-rated VPN service due to its large number of available servers across 77 locations and competitive pricing. “Private Internet Access may be cheap, but it still does not offer much value. On a positive note, it does have good VPN apps that are secure and user-friendly. But even with that, these drawbacks stand out: Slow and inconsistent speeds; Based in the United States; Does not work well with streaming services; Troubling history with the parent company (Kape); Mediocre support that may or may not be available.

In short, we’re not recommending this VPN. There are too many other great alternatives to consider.”

However, the drawbacks that experts claim and keep some of them from recommending IPVanish falls onto privacy concerns — US jurisdiction (five-eyes), shady California-based parent company (J2 Global), limited refund policy, limited Netflix support, and a bad track record of cooperating with the FBI on logs.

Plus, unlike many other VPN companies on the market, IPVanish has really fantastic customer support, available 24/7 over email, phone, or live chat. “IPVanish VPN isn’t in consideration for our top VPN services and it shouldn’t be near the top of your list for an all-rounder VPN service either. It’s slow to switch servers, connected speeds are middling to terrible, and streaming compatibility with popular international services is basically non-existent. ProtonVPN was recognized as a leading VPN provider by PrivacyTools (#2 best VPN for Privacy), SafeHome (#1 Best Privacy), and Wired (#1 Best Free VPN), and makes the top of our list as the #1 best free VPN provider.

ProtonVPN is a fast and privacy-focused Swiss-based VPN service, supported by the company Proton Technologies AG (makers of the popular anonymous email service, ProtonMail). ProtonVPN offers both free and paid plans and is one of the only VPN providers to offer Unlimited bandwidth for their free VPN plan. They offer top security and privacy features you won’t find on most other VPNs, including Secure Core, Perfect forward secrecy, strict no-logs policy, open-source, independently audited, and Tor over VPN support built-in.

Why Choose ProtonVPN?

ProtonVPN is the Best VPN for Privacy

ProtonVPN was developed by experts who have been working in cybersecurity for over 30 years, to provide the best privacy protection compared to any other VPN provider. They are independently operated and based entirely in Switzerland, which is outside of EU and US jurisdiction. ProtonVPN’s Secure Core feature is built to prevent attackers from intercepting, interfering, hacking, and decrypting VPN traffic, while their Forward Secrecy feature uses the latest web technologies to encrypt data in transit, which is critical for protecting your privacy and security online

ProtonVPN has a strict zero-logs policy, zero-knowledge DNS service called “ProtonDNS”, is 100% open-source (code published on GitHub), and participates in independent audits which means your data is more secure than any other VPN and it’s trusted by experts and journalists worldwide – including Edward Snowden.

ProtonVPN is the only VPN provider to be tested against all of the Five / Nine Eyes countries’ legal systems, which means they are potentially free from any backdoor surveillance agreements.

If you need a VPN that you can trust to keep your data and activity private, ProtonVPN is your best bet, recommended by most cybersecurity experts.

ProtonVPN is the Best Free VPN

ProtonVPN is the only free VPN that has no privacy-invading ads, no malware, no bandwidth limits, and doesn’t sell your browsing data. It uses artificial intelligence to provide you with an intuitive protection so you don’t have to think about configuration or safety.

Their free plan has limited servers (1 out of 5 available servers), limited locations (5 out of 55+ available locations), and limited data usage. You can try ProtonVPN for free today!

ProtonVPN is Extremely Fast

ProtonVPN offers a unique feature called VPN Accelerator that can increase your VPN speeds by over 400%.  The accelerator is able to secure your internet connection by routing all of the data through ProtonVPN servers, leaving virtually no chance for a malicious actor to intercept or tamper with that data.

This is perfect for people who are using a VPN to stream videos, play online games, or downloading & uploading torrents and other large files.

Why Choose VyprVPN

Undetectable VPN

VyprVPN is great for hiding your identity while browsing the internet. Their Chameleon technology lets you do this by concealing that you’re using a VPN, making it seem like there’s nothing fancy at all happening on their end!

Their Chameleon™ technology is a proprietary blend of cutting-edge protocols and obfuscation technologies that allow you to bypass firewalls, block tracking software, and breakthrough censorship restrictions. Providing maximum security while allowing access to Internet sites and services from anywhere in the world!

Chameleon scrambles OpenVPN packet metadata to ensure it’s not recognizable via deep packet inspection, while still keeping it fast and lightweight enough to avoid latency and VPN blocking. It does so by obfuscating the headers, encrypting the metadata and sending it through a patent-pending system that wraps it in an outer UDP / TCP wrapper, then sends the encrypted result across the Internet.

In other words, nobody can tell what kind of traffic you’re using – not your ISP, not Netflix, not YouTube, not even China.

As a result of this technology, you can defeat blocking efforts by authoritarian governments or ISPs. Of course, the packets are encrypted so nobody can see what sites you visit, who you talk to on Instant Messaging apps, etc. Plus it also works on mobile devices running iOS and Android.

Bypass The Great Firewall of China

China (and the Great Firewall) is a tough place for VPNs . However, VyprVPN has always been above the Great Firewall and is currently the only VPN that can bypass it while keeping you protected with their NAT Firewall.

NAT (Network Address Translation) passes all network traffic through VyprVPN’s Golden Frog-owned IP addresses, instead of your own. Golden Frog owns and controls all hardware and runs all servers in their Tier-1 data center, giving them maximum control and security.

Unblock Streaming Site

VyprVPN and it’s proprietary Chameleon™ technology allows for easy, undetectable access to almost every Streaming site you could need. Several experts, including VPNMentor, VPNRanks, cybernews, ProPrivacy, VPNOverview and U.S.News confirmed that VyprVPN works with Netflix ), Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Eurpsport, MuchTV, Sky Go, and more across 45 regions.

If you’re looking for an ultra-reliable streaming VPN that’s a little less mainstream than other top-ranking VPN providers — VyprVPN is the way to go!

VyprVPN for Business

VyprVPN for Business is a powerful VPN service that provides a secure, reliable, and fast VPN experience for your company.

VyprVPN for Business provides automatic VPN connection through the VyprVPN Ping feature. With this tool, if a remote user is unable to establish a PPP or L2TP/IPSec connection with the central gateway, the system will automatically ping the target server address continuously until it becomes available. If successful, it will establish a VPN connection.

VyprVPN for Business supports unlimited user accounts, provides world-class enterprise support, and can be deployed globally. To top this all off, it offers VyprVPN’s powerful Chameleon™ technology that scrambles OpenVPN packet metadata, preventing deep packet inspection of the VPN. There is no other VPN service that provides this level of security and privacy without sacrificing performance.

VyprVPN for Business also offers an easy-to-use custom control panel with over 30 pre-configured applications to choose from, allowing admins to set bandwidth limits, throttle speeds, block specific protocols, etc., all on your own.

VyprVPN for Business makes it easy to connect and protect your company, offering unlimited user accounts with your subscription. With VyprVPN you can provide security and privacy to all of your employees without sacrificing speed or reliability. And best of all, the service is offered at a fraction of the cost of traditional VPN providers.

On the other hand, it unblocks US Netflix and offers 700+ servers in 70 countries worldwide. But, few cons, as mentioned above, have forced me not to recommend this VPN to privacy seekers.”

Hotspot Shield was considered the “Fastest VPN”, along with best VPN for Netflix, streaming, and gaming by many experts. On average, Hotspot Shield VPN ranked 7.14 on experts’ Top 10 VPN Overall lists, while claiming spots among the top 5 according to T3, Reviews.org, Toms Guide, TechRadar, and ITProPortal.

Hotspot Shield is a California-based VPN provider that offers a great list of benefits as well as some notable drawbacks. Its proprietary VPN client allows up to 5 simultaneous connections from a single account and includes an ad-blocking firewall and malware protection. Hotspot Shield’s privacy policy states that customer information is not logged, but also reveals that it uses Google tracking, which some experts consider an invasion of privacy.

Hotspot Shield also offers a free VPN service that comes with reduced functionality. Hotspot Shield’s free version allows up to 500mb per day, while the paid version supports unlimited bandwidth. Hotspot Shield is effective for bypassing censorship in certain countries or regions, but it’s not reliable for unblocking content on streaming sites like Netflix or Hulu.

Why Choose Hotspot Shield VPN

One Of The Fastest VPN Services

Hotspot Shield VPN has been rated the “fastest VPN” by various experts and praised by almost every expert for their fast and consistent speeds. In 2021, it ranked top 3 for fastest VPN in the US and in the UK by Tom’s Guide and TechRadar. PCPro also ranked Hotspot Shield as one of the fastest VPNs at speedtest.net, and Expert Reviews gave it a 9/10 for speed.

If you’re looking for a fast and reliable US-based VPN provider, you can’t go wrong with Hotspot Shield.

Best Streaming Performance

Of course, being among the fastest US-based VPN service, it’s no wonder Hotspot Shield was also ranked high among the best VPNs for streaming, along with the best Netflix VPN according to T3 (#2), Reviews.org (#3), Toms Guide (#4), TechRadar (#5) and ITProPortal (#5).

Hotspot Shield is effective for streaming on sites like Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, and more. PCMag rated Hotspot Shield VPN #5 out of 34 VPNs in terms of video streaming performance. It claims to “never slow you down” while browsing the web or watching your favorite shows.

Among The Best Gaming VPNs

Hotspot Shield was ranked among the top 5 Best VPNs for Gaming by T3 (#2), Reviews.org (#4), Expert Reviews (#5), and PCMag(#5).

Hotspot Shield is effective for gaming on sites like Steam, Minecraft, and more. PCMag rated Hotspot Shield VPN #7 out of 34 VPNs in terms of online gaming performance.

100% Free VPN Plan

While Hotspot Shield is a paid VPN service in general (and the remarks above are of the paid plans), it does offer a free plan for mobile and desktop users.

The free plan allows you to access all content available in your country of residence, protect yourself from tracking cookies by redirecting them when you surf the web, and up to 500MB of data per day. Hotspot Shield says it does not track or record user activities on the free plan, but their privacy policy reveals that they share your personal information with third parties who use tracking technologies.

Why Avoid Hotspot Shield VPN

Privacy & Jurisdiction (USA)

Hotspot Shield’s privacy policy reveals that it may, in some cases, share your personal information with third parties for the purpose of providing advertisements and analyzing user behavior when you use Hotspot Shield.

This is a concern because Hotspot Shield is based in the United States and is subject to the laws and regulations of this jurisdiction.

The United States is known for aggressively pursuing data sharing with the government and other countries.

Expensive Pricing

Hotspot Shield may have a free plan but it’s also one of the most expensive VPNs on the market, which is a big turnoff for some users. Hotspot Shield’s Premium plan currently costs $12.99/month ($7.99/mo Annual) for 5 devices, while their Premium Family (for 25 devices) costs $19.99/mo ($11.99/mo annual).

If you’re just looking for a VPN — these prices may be too high when compared to the competition. However, Hotspot Shield justifies these prices by including an Antivirus (for windows & mac), a Spam-call blocker (for iOS & Android), and a password manager for all devices for no additional charge.

If you’re an avid streamer, gamer, or will take advantage of the extra benefits — the extra cost may totally be justified. However, for most people looking for a VPN — Hotspot Shield may be overkill.

What is a VPN?

A VPN (virtual private network) is one of the best ways to protect your online identity, stay anonymous and bypass restrictions effortlessly.

They’re easy-to-use (one click to connect), it won’t slow down your internet or computer, and you can use it anywhere (Smartphone, Tablet, Router, etc.). We’ve used them for years because they work – whether we’re at home, the office, or traveling aboard.

VPN

How Does VPN Work?

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, acts as a middle man between you and the internet. It encrypts all of the information that goes out, keeping you anonymous while you’re online. No one can see what you’re doing or who you are, and thus you gain the freedom of the truly open internet. Not only does this make your internet connection and activity secure, but you can virtually change your location, unblock censored website, access geo-restricted content, and bypass data throttling restrictions (making your Internet faster).

  5. Encrypt data traveling between your computer and the internet (e.g., shopping online)
  6. Downloading whole websites (including pictures, music, videos, etc.)
  7. Prevent being tracked by governments or corporations
  8. Stop snoopers from remotely controlling or surveilling you
  9. Get around firewalls that prevent watching Youtube abroad
  10. Streaming International Content Legally

1. Hide your Internet browsing activity

You can browse the internet anonymously by using a VPN to hide your identity and location.

2. Overcome censorship blocks

There are instances when you live in a place where there is strict censorship imposed upon you. This has created an issue where the people living in the area are not able to access social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. through their country’s internet service providers. A VPN will help you overcome these blocks by connecting to a server outside of your internet service provider’s jurisdiction, thus gaining access to any blocked website on the planet.

3. Protect yourself on public Wifi connections

Public WiFi providers no longer need a password, so it makes it all too easy for hackers to find their way into your private information. A VPN will encrypt your data while it travels between you and the public WiFi provider, preventing others from intercepting it and getting access to any personal or sensitive information that was transmitted during that time.

4. Keep hackers and spies from seeing your PC screen

A hacker can see everything you’re doing on a compromised connection, including your password as you type it in, meaning having a VPN installed can give you an added layer of security when using a public network.

5. Encrypt data traveling between your computer and the internet

When using public networks, there is no telling who might be looking at what websites users are surfing across the globe through their IP address which may be seen as a security risk. VPN secures all internet communications so users can surf the web safely and securely.

6. Downloading whole websites (including pictures, music, videos, etc.)

Using a VPN allows you to download files from the internet without putting your IP address on display for others to see and track along with the data that you’re downloading which may contain information that some people might want to keep secret and anonymous such as torrents and other files.

7. Prevent being tracked by governments or corporations

In some cases, individuals are not able to protect themselves from being tracked by their local government or even global corporations. In order for them to be protected from these entities using their data in ways that they do not approve of is to get access to a VPN.

8. Stop snoopers from remotely controlling or surveilling you

The act of spying is an activity that most governments engage in by keeping track of the movements of their citizens through mobile devices, computers, cameras, and other gadgets which can be used for spying purposes that might breach someone’s privacy by obtaining information on what they are doing without them knowing. This can be avoided by having simple encryption software like VPN protecting one’s privacy from being breached.

9. Get around firewalls that prevent watching Youtube abroad

In some countries, YouTube has been blocked due to censorship issues in order to restrict the activities people do online by restricting them from accessing certain websites such as this one. In order to get around this, you can use a VPN to connect to servers outside of your country which is able to unblock sites like YouTube while also encrypting your data so you don’t have to worry about getting caught while watching your favorite videos.

10. Stream and Watch Better Shows & Movies on Netflix & Others

Sometimes it is difficult for people living in other countries to access websites that provide full-length movies and TV shows because they might only offer specific streaming rights for other countries which will block them from accessing their contents through geoblocking tactics. Using a VPN will allow you to get past these restrictions by letting you choose where the server will be located when connecting, thus letting you unblock any website that restricts their content within other territories.

Here are the eight compatibility factors to take into account:

  1. Functionality — Will it do what you need it to do? Do they allow torrenting? Can you stream Netflix or Disney+ it?
  2. Network — Does it have servers in countries you need?
  3. Privacy — Does the VPN meet your privacy requirements?

  8. Money Back Guarantee — If you don’t like them, will you be able to get a full refund?

Functional Compatibility

Not every VPN is the same, even the best VPNs. Some VPN providers are better at doing certain activities better, faster or more reliably than others. This will vary based on what you’ll be using the VPN for most often. We include a “Works with” highlight above for each VPN, with a summary of what popular functionalities each VPN is reliably compatible for, including torrenting and streaming. You can dive into our full review for each VPN to see a full list of functional compatibilities.

Network Compatibility

Do you need to virtually travel to certain countries with your VPN? Make sure the VPN has servers in the countries that matter to you, or at the very least have an adequate size network with enough countries that works for you. Want to access Canadian Netflix? Make sure your VPN has servers in Canada that also work with Netflix. Need to connect to a Crypto Marketplace that’s banned in your country? Better make sure your VPN has countries that work with it. If this is a big concern, we’ve recommend CyberGhost, as it has the largest VPN network spanning 93 countries.

Privacy Compatibility

Does the VPN meet your privacy and anonymity requirements? Make sure they have a no logging policy and are based in privacy-minded jurisdiction like Romania or Switzerland.

If you care about keeping yourself safe from government surveillance while using your VPN, it is important that you find one that has a zero logs policy as well as being located in countries such as Panama where there is stronger protection against data requests than other places around the world including North America and Europe.

Budget Compatibility

Most VPNs are fairly cheap as it is, costing on average at most $12 per month, and on the cheaper end, around $2 to $3 per month if you pay upfront for 1 or 2 years.

Device Compatibility

Does the VPN work with the devices you’ll be using it with? All of the Best VPN providers listed above offer software and apps for the most popular devices such as Window PCs, Macs, iPhone, iPad, and Android, but some work better than others. If you want to use a VPN on a Wifi Router, Firestick, or SmartTV — you’ll want to make sure the VPN you choose works with it and how the setup works before you commit. Last thing you need is a VPN that works great on all your devices, except the main one you wanted it for.

Payment Methods

Does your VPN accept your preferred payment method? If you’re paying with a Credit Card or Debit/Bank Card, you won’t have an issue here. However, if you want to pay with PayPal, Crypto, or an alternative payment method — it’s important to check which VPNs that meets your other criteria will also accepts your money, in whatever form its in.

Top-Notch Customer Support

Good customer support is essential and extremely important. This is a huge factor when choosing a VPN, but luckily for you, all of the Best VPNs listed above have stellar reviews regarding customer support so you’ll be in good hands choosing any of them in this regard. If you stray outside of these VPNs, make sure their customer support is up to par. Find out how you can reach them, how long they take to respond, and what others thought of their support.

Money Back Guarantee

Last but certainly not least, is their refund policy. All of the VPNs on our top list offer at least a 30-day money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied. This is by far the most important factor when choosing a VPN because sometimes it just doesn’t work out and the VPN you purchased doesn’t meet your requirements or lacks in one way or another. In these cases, you want to make sure you can get your money back without any hassle so you can move on with your life and onto another more compatible VPN.

Do I need a VPN provider?

This is a question asked by many people who are new to using a VPN. The answer depends on the person, so here are some of the most common usages for a VPN:

A Virtual Private Network can be used to protect your privacy and security when online. You can use one to change your IP address which then makes it possible for you to get around geographical restrictions that would otherwise prevent you from accessing certain websites or streaming content from around the world.

VPNs can be used to bypass geo-restrictions present in some parts of the world, allowing its users access content that would not normally be available in their country of origin. This includes streaming sites such as Netflix and Hulu

What’s the different between a Logging & No-Log VPN?

No logging VPNs encrypt all of your internet traffic, but they don’t keep any logs of user activities. Whereas with a logging VPN, it collects some data from user sessions and stores them for a limited time.

This is because it’s necessary to be able to react when law enforcement makes an enquiry in case they need additional information that is not present in the logs. That is why some providers keep connection logs only every 24 hours while others may keep them for 30 or even 60 days – in case there are legal grounds requiring the retention of these records (for example when certain regions legally require).

Connection Logs vs Activity Logs

VPN logs are records of data sent or received through a VPN, also known as the “traffic log” of your VPN connection. This includes IP addresses, bandwidth usage, and duration for each session.

VPN activity logs are any other type of logging that might be used by the provider to keep track on their side, like traffic throttling or blocked connections (per country or service).

What is the best jurisdiction for a no log VPN?

While a VPN encrypts your connections with the internet and your ISP, if they are the wrong jurisdiction, the VPN’s home government, laws or even a judge can order the VPN to collect, retain, and reveal your data logs or even actively spy on your activity through your VPN.

The best jurisdiction is one that has no data retention laws, does not cooperate with foreign governments, and respects internet freedom.

In general, here are the best VPN jurisdiction :

  1. Panama — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws. (NordVPN)
  2. British Virgin Islands — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws. (ExpressVPN & Surfshark)
  3. Switzerland — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws. (ProtonVPN & VyprVPN)
  4. Romania — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws. (CyberGhost)
  5. Singapore — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws.
  6. Bulgaria — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws.
  7. Malaysia — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws.
  8. Seychelles — Non-member of 14 eyes. No data retention laws.
  9. Netherlands — Not recommended anymore due to privacy laws changing.
  10. Sweden — Not recommended anymore due to privacy laws changing. (Mullvad VPN)
  11. Hong Kong — Not recommended due to CCP takeover and strict anti-privacy laws.

The most secure jurisdiction in the world is Panama, due to its lack of data retention laws and no foreign government cooperation. The next best option is Switzerland because it does not have any mandatory data-retention law for VPN service providers but does cooperate with foreign governments in cases where they are under criminal investigation.

The worst jurisdiction in the world for privacy is the United States of America, Canada and Western Europe since they have mandatory data-retention laws which require VPN providers to keep certain logs. The U.S. also has a policy of cooperating with foreign governments such as those in Western Europe and North America where law enforcement agencies may try to use other means such as ” mutual legal assistance treaties” which allow them to bypass their own local laws and enable direct cooperation between law enforcement agencies from different countries on criminal investigations implicating more than one country — known as the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance.

VPNs are mostly used by people nowadays to access entertainment content, such as blocked videos and using torrents. However, they can do so much more than this:

  • Improved security: The main feature of a VPN is that it encrypts all your network traffic. Therefore, nobody can see your online activities, not even your ISP or the government.
  • Privacy and anonymity: When you connect to a VPN, you are prompted to connect to a server. That server will act as your middle-person, using its own IP address and credentials. Your IP address and identity are hidden, and you can browse the web anonymously.
  • Remote access: A VPN allows employees to access their work computers remotely. Ever since VPNs were developed, global companies have been using VPNs to let their employees access remote files regardless of location.

These are the benefits of using a VPN, proving that VPNs are cost-effective and great investments.

In most countries, VPNs are not illegal. However, what you do after connecting to the VPN is another matter. Some countries have placed restrictions on VPN usage and only allow providers that are licensed by the government. Some of these countries are:

  • China
  • Russia
  • Iran
  • Oman

There are also countries that have imposed a total ban on VPNs, and these are:

  • Turkmenistan
  • Iraq
  • North Korea
  • Belarus

The UAE, on the other hand, recognizes the importance of VPNs for corporations but do not allow individuals to use one.

There are suitable VPN services for every device:

  • Laptops
  • Desktops
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Media consoles
  • Routers.

We have a list of the best VPNs for most devices which you can find under the “Best VPNs” tab above. Every VPN provider we listed in these pages were tested by our team of experts and ranked according to reliability, affordability, logging policy, warranties, and other important factors.

Most operating systems are compatible with VPNs, and we created dedicated pages for each OS. Under the “Best VPNs” tab, you can see our list of the best VPN service providers for macOS, Windows, Linux, and mobile operating systems like iOS and Android. Each VPN provider is proven and tested to work with the specific OS, and we also keep the lists updated.

Yes, you can. As a matter of fact, 43% of daily VPN users are on mobile, according to The State of VPN Usage. A VPN provides security when users connect to public Wifi hotspots in coffee shops, airports, and hotels. Free Wi-Fi hotspots are very convenient, but they also make users vulnerable to hackers because this type of connection is often open and unsecured. Even worse, some hackers open free Wifi with the express intent of stealing information. Some users may find their emails hacked and financial information stolen because they connected their phones to these free public Wifi hotspots. For security and privacy, it’s better to use a VPN on your phone, and other mobile devices, especially when you are on the go and rely mostly on public hotspots.

A simple search on the Internet will reveal hundreds of VPN providers claiming to be the best. As it will be difficult for you to prove each of them to be right or wrong, we did all the hard work for you. We tested numerous VPNs and listed the best providers just above. All these VPN providers have passed our standards in terms of:

    • Security: These VPN providers use the latest encryption standard which is uncrackable. Most of them also have the Kill Switch feature which will shut off the network if the VPN connection is lost, thereby preventing IP leaks.
    • Reliability: We also tested the uptime of each VPN provider, the upload and download speeds of multiple servers, and overall reliability. Customer support is also an important factor in their reliability as a company, and we included this in our reviews.

  • Affordability: The prices offered by VPN providers should be at par with the quality of their services. The providers on our list have struck a fair balance between quality and price. You can get a VPN service within the range of $3.33 to $8.39 per month.

The best VPN provider should have these three general characteristics. Read our reviews to find out which VPN provider meets your needs.

It’s important to emphasize the importance of going for a paid VPN rather than free services. You should be wondering how these providers, that promise lifetime free VPN services, are earning money. According to a CSIRO study, most of these services (a scary 75% of them) log your usage and personal data. These providers can sell these details to data brokers and advertisers.  Moreover, based on tests on 283 free VPN providers, the study found out the following:

  • 38% contain malware.
  • 19% lack encryption which leads to traffic leaks, despite the promise to use encrypted tunnelling.
  • 84% do not tunnel IPv6 traffic, and 66% do not tunnel DNS traffic.
  • 16% use non-transparent proxies to manipulate traffic.

These statistics are quite alarming. That’s why it’s better to sign up with a VPN provider that is reliable and proven to be secure, even if it means you have to shell out some money. You can get a VPN service like PIA for as low as $3.33 per month, and you can even get a discount if you sign up for a longer term.

Normally, when you open a website, your computer sends a request to the web server. The web server then responds to your computer either to allow you to access the website or not. However, when you use a VPN, it will act as a ‘middle-person’ between your device and the web server. Instead of your traffic going directly back and forth, it first passes through your VPN software where it gets encrypted, then to the VPN server, then to the web server you’re trying to access, back to the VPN, and finally back to your device where your VPN software decrypts it and displays it as normal. All these steps happen within fractions of a second, but a VPN does add a few extra moments into the process. Most of the time, the difference is unnoticeable to all but those who do frequent speed tests. Nonetheless, the difference in speed is a small tradeoff when compared to the security and privacy that you can get from using a VPN.

A VPN IP leak happens when a user’s real IP address becomes visible even while using a VPN service. This is usually due to browser plugins, DNS leaks, and even your device’s operating system. IP leak also happens if you lost your VPN connection while still connected to the network. Your IP address is leaked because, for a few moments, you aren’t protected by the VPN. The best VPN providers have developed ways to avoid IP leaks, and the most notable innovation is the Kill Switch feature. If a VPN provider has a Kill Switch and you turn that feature on, your network connection will automatically shut down whenever the VPN connection is lost. This is what prevents the IP leaks.

Choosing the best VPN for your needs and it depends what you need it for, how you plan on using it, where you’re located and what your budget.

If you want to use a VPN for streaming, choose a VPN that works with your streaming services. If you’re looking to download torrents anonymously, make sure you choose one that allows torrents/p2p traffic and has a no logging policy.

Most importantly, check the user reviews and make sure they offer at least a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try them out risk-free. If it doesn’t meet your needs, get a refund and choose a better VPN that better fits your needs.

Of course, we try our best to make sure you find the best VPN the first time, but just in case, all of the top VPN we recommend offer at least a 30-day money-back guarantee.

VPNs and proxies share some similarities, such as both protect your anonymity by hiding your IP address. But there are still some key differences between them. Not all of these differences will apply to your situation, but it’s worth understanding the benefits of each solution if you’re shopping around for a VPN or proxy provider.

  • A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel with military grade encryption (AES 256) that requires authentication before any data can be passed through it (and has high speeds).
  • Proxies use unencrypted HTTP requests so cybercriminals could see things like the websites you visit and logins you enter — not good if they put credit card information in online forms! Whereas a VPN provider is responsible for its own servers and data.

VPNs will also have a significantly more useful features, and be easier to setup & use than proxies,. We have a full breakdown in our blog titled VPN or Proxy: Which is better?
